Right to work bill clears committee

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The controversial right to work bill advanced in the state Senate Monday morning and the governor committed to signing it before the end of the week.

A state Senate committee voted 6-to-1 to send the right to work bill to the Senate floor.

Republican Brent Waltz of Greenwood was the lone "no" vote.

The three Democrats on the committee protested by boycotting the hearing. However, their numbers are too small to prevent a quorum.

Nevertheless the committee heard testimony on both sides of the measure that makes all union membership voluntary.

In the hallway union protesters chanted "Super Bowl, Super rally."

The right to work bill will be eligible for amendments tomorrow. Republicans will likely vote down any attempt to change the bill. That would make it possible for final passage to take place on Wednesday and the governor could sign it shortly thereafter.

Braves1, 1776 and bluecollormike. What pipe have you been smoking. You do not get it at all. Even if you believe nonunion shops pay more then union shops it doesnt matter. you support a bill that will diminish wages and benefits for all period. Its really not a union non union issue, its a labor issue. They are using unions to get this thing started and then it will be you! Best wake up and smell the deceitful garbage you have been sold.

@braves1 You said "The high union wages is what will continue to drive the cost of goods and services up" right after you said "The .25 and hour you get annually in a union shop, is well behind what non-union manufacturing facilities are getting". Which one is it?
braves1
All you RTW protestors need to compare annual raises of non-union shops to your union shops. Also most of the non-union shops have far better benefits than the union shop - from vacation time to health benefits. They won't compare. The .25 and hour you get annually in a union shop, is well behind what non-union manufacturing facilities are getting. The high union wages is what will continue to drive the cost of goods and services up. The Democrats handled this intire ordeal like children and they should be embarrassed and so should anyone who voted for them. As a state we are going in the right direction.

Bluecollarmike, Its you that needs to wake up. Mitch Daniels slid his BS right under your nose. His own words, "Indiana is losing NEARLY a third of all job opportunities because we are not RTW". So, for those not so good in math, that means not quite 3. Thus, better than f of the time we are winning jobs. So by your logic, less than 33 is bigger than 66. We ARE OUT PERFORMING RTW ALREADY BY 2 TO 1. Thats without selling out to big corporate profits and low ball labor! Please tell me where all these jobs that you know of are going? Seriously I would love for one person to make a good argument for RTW. There isnt one, You don't like unions or union dues, there are plenty of jobs out there for you. You do quite well on your own, thats fantastic! Union people stand together so that everyone gets more. Its a choice and we make it.

And where are all these jobs going? There hasnt been a RTW state since 2001? And why is Indian's economy and budget better than almost every other in the nation? All I keep hearing is how the nations unemployment has remained high? Certainly havent heard of any boomtowns lately. Indiana is the crossroads of America, Its a great place to do business and RTW isnt considered by businesses as a determining factor. You just swallowed the huge load republicans spewed out. This isnt a party vote for me, if dems were pushing this, i would still vote against it.

Bluecollarmike, You are quite diluted. Sure there is an upswing in employment when RTW passes, Thats only the brief period for building the new places, once they are built the numbers drop. Why are so many RTW states the poorest in the nation and why hasnt that changed since they went RTW? Why isnt every state in the union going after RTW? Because when you look at the jobs, they are low pay and little benefits. All your success could end tomorrow, for no reason. then what? Dems didnt get a chance to "reach acroos the aisle". Bosma was trying to vote on it the first day trying to sneak it in and now they just want it all to disappear before the superbowl. So, In voting RTW you wont have to pay dues which you didnt anyway but you certainly wont be getting any benefits or job security either. Good luck

Bluecollarmike I am sorry you have fallen for that BS. We all had a choice now with RTW we do not. Careful what you wish for. Sub poverty level jobs are on the way. Good luck.

I work for a non union shop and i keep seeing the company take more and more away from us, and make us start paying more and more every year for our benefits and we have no say so of any type. I was union before i got this job. I want to go back to a union shop. I am tired of the company being able to take what they want when they want and change the rules when they feel like it. And yes I have an option for that but i do want to keep on working.
