The right to work bill advanced in the state Senate this morning and the governor committed to signing it before the end of the week.
A state Senate committee voted 6-to-1 to send the right to work bill to the Senate floor. Republican Brent Waltz of Greenwood was the lone “no” vote. The 3 Democrats on the committee protesed by boycotting the hearing.
Their numbers are too small to prevent a quorum. ”
Nobody gives a whit about what we have to say,” said Sen. Tim Skinner (D-Terre Haute.) “I’m just not going to dignify what’s about to take place in that hearing with my presence.”
Nevertheless the committee heard testimony on both sides of the measure that makes all union membership voluntary. In the hallway union protesters chanted “Super Bowl, Super rally!” at one point.”
Governor Mitch Daniels said he will sign the measure at the first opportunity and, when asked about the potential for Super Bowl disruptions said, “I wouldn’t expect that.” He said that if anything is done to damage the spirit of the event, “I think it would be a huge mistake on the part of those who did it.”
The right to work bill will be eligible for amendments tomorrow. Look for Republicans to vote down any attempt to change it. That would make it possible for final passage to take place on Wednesday and the governor could sign it shortly thereafter.
