House opens debate on right-to-work

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's House of Representatives is debating the divisive right-to-work measure before possibly clearing the final hurdle.

House Democrats ended an off-and-on boycott Wednesday clearing the way for a final vote in the House. Although they have not guaranteed they will not walk out again to block the vote.

Indiana is poised to become the 23rd state to ban unions from collecting mandatory fees for representation. The Senate is poised to pass the House measure and Gov. Mitch Daniels has said he will sign it.

Rep. Jerry Torr, R-Carmel, argued that his right-to-work proposal would not lower wages or bust unions.

But union protester chants of "No right-to-work!" and "Liar!" drowned much of his testimony after Democrats opened the doors to the House chamber at the start of the debate.

FINALLY!!!!! Now maybe these unions will be more accountable to the membership instead of a money laundering machine for the democratic party!!! We live in a global economy, you cannot make wigits for 5.00 and sell them for 2.00 and survive. If we could now get the Govt. off the backs of business may we would stop seeing all the jobs going out of the country.

The bill is a union killer plain and simple.Allow people to opt out of paying the dues and they will. The unions are weekened by lack of funding and they will leave.RTW states lose 50% of their unions and 80% of their union workers.Average income for union and nonunion workers fell an average of 10%.A 1% rise in large corperations is the average for RTW states.Non RTW states have had a 2% rise in large corperations. The national average is 3% over all .Think Subaru and yes Master Lock as a couple of examples. Workers benefits and time of has droped 7%.All of this is recorded and listed on the web, just search (Does right to work create jobs) and pro and con sites will come up. These statistics were on both types of sites. They both had other things and numbers but these were the only matching ones. Both types of sites did say jobs in general increased but said they were not high paying for the most part and that almost none of them were union jobs.So yes it is a union killer and wages will drop with benefits. The thing that will be noticed the most is the power of the nions will be reduced making bargaining for worker benefits nearly non exsistant.Everyone should decide on their own if this is good or badand then be allowed to vote on it.Unfotunately this will not happen our state government must think we can't deside for our selves. It is sad really.i came from a right to work state and have never been in a union.I do know Federal law already protects non-union workers in the same way just seems to be a redundant and time wasting bill.

Mitch Daniels says the Union workers will make 1,500 less a year if Right to work passes but if you look at the pay scale chart online it shows how much the Union Operator makes right now in Indiana and how much they would make if it was a right to work state and it is about $10.00 less an hour not counting the decrease in benefits

This is gonna hurt so many families all of the people that have their mortgages/ bills bases on what they make a year you say 1,500 less a year when what you really mean is about 10 dollars less an hour I think all republicans voting for this since they are so well off they think they can take our money they should have to take a pay cut
