Dems call for right to work referendum

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Democrats in the Indiana House of Representatives threatened another walkout Friday morning over the right to work issue. The threat led to a concession by the House Speaker.

The Democrats now say that the right to work issue should go to the public in a statewide referendum. They threatened to walk out again if Republicans took steps to prevent a vote on the referendum idea.

Democratic Leader Pat Bauer called reporters to his office this morning to say he had reason to believe that Republicans would use a parliamentary maneuver to rule a Democratic amendment out of order when the right to work bill will be debated next Tuesday.

A referendum would give Democrats a second chance to kill right to work. "It's time to have the people involved in this process," said Rep. Bauer. "I think that that will eliminate some of the outrage, some of the outrage of the public."

"I think it's a very reasonable amendment to offer," said House Speaker Brian Bosma after a pair of closed door meetings with Bauer, "and we indicated there'd be full and fair debate and discussion here and I indicated we wouldn't use parliamentary means to avoid the referendum."

The Speaker says he doesn't know how a vote on the referendum suggestion will come out but said he's not afraid of the outcome. Unlike other states Indiana has never had a statewide referendum on policy question like right to work.

If unions are so great then why did the union steward I bought a house from have a towel for a bathroom door? Hillbily or just broke?

If unions are so great, Why is only 13% of the work force union?

If unions are so great, then why do they have to resort to thug behavior and criminal intimidation? Sleep with organized crime much? Looks like Felon Soros and his color coded communism is in good company.

How much money did the commercial to convince me this was a good idea cost? If you have to convince me then it is not a good idea. All a game if you do not pay a Union then the Union cuts a new contract and they get the same benefit. Then the folks who are paying say hey “I don’t want to pay either” and then the union is busted this is total crap. If it was not for unions you would not have a weekend, Your kids would be working when they were 12 and there would be no safety issues addressed and wages would go down for the standard middle class family $5000. Does not sound like Mitch cares much for Middle class families to me.

AwlHattin_Ocattle you are missing the point. You and everyone have a choice what companies you work for. Your Quote "As a 54 year old anti-union union member" If you are so miserable why are working for a union company? Cannot find other work? not that talented? Why are so bitter?

@ BUSINESS1, YOU ASKED ,,, Why is it so bad to give employees the right to choose? Answer,,,, There is nothing wrong with employees choosing if they don't want to be in the union. The problem is,,, The union has to represent the people that don't want to pay union dues and not join the union the same as union members that pay dues. Do you think that is fair ? That's where the problem is. Why should the union have to represent those that don't pay and join ? And when people see other people not paying and still getting the same union benefits as paying members, then eventually no one will want pay . And eventually the unions will fade away. That is why this is seen as a ploy to bust up the unions. In other words, the unions couldn't care less about you joining them, they just don't want to represent you for free. Now, I hope all of you have read this and fully understand it. If not , then you need to be educated more about RTW. That is why the dems want this to voted on by the people in the next election. So everyone can understand what the RTW is all about.

I think we should draw some interest from the national media on this RTW bill during the Super Bowl, Perhaps the Union Members of the NFL could show some support and maybe if Green Bay makes it here the Wisconson response to ther RTW revolt could start the ball rolling, oh yea Ohio cvould join in also.

In 1916, a minister and outspoken advocate for liberty, William J. H. Boetcker, published a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots: You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

@fortheride, Are you for real? Comparing communist governemnts whos countries are bottom feeders of personal freedom to RTW? What part of freedom bothers you so? Freedom to fail? Your mindset must be all envy all the time. It seems you want to everyone to be just as unhappy as you. It will never work, even in your beloved communist countries there are human beings longing for freedom. You won’t find a harder working people than here in Indiana. What you also will not find are unions creaing jobs, building business,or hiring people unless it is in the union office using money that was confiscated from hard working individuals,,(individuals and unions don't mix),rewrite,,confiscated from the zombie collective,,,Sidebar; [eeewww that word collective sends a bad bad tingling up my legs]rewrite; confiscated from the union zombie sheep confined feeding floor of human labor whos protectionism is based on nothing other than communism lite, or as your admired founder Karl Marx, whose maxim declared, "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." unions copy this manefesto; let those who abilities are least make equal pay of those whos abilites are great, forcing the burden of responsibility for stewardship from the individual, to the union thuggery who then enforce redistribution of wealth. In failing to discern this distinction,@fortheride and union thugs continues to set the stage for the entrapment of future generations by the welfare state and the incremental shift from self-reliance to dependence upon the state.
