Dems call for right to work referendum

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Democrats in the Indiana House of Representatives threatened another walkout Friday morning over the right to work issue. The threat led to a concession by the House Speaker.

The Democrats now say that the right to work issue should go to the public in a statewide referendum. They threatened to walk out again if Republicans took steps to prevent a vote on the referendum idea.

Democratic Leader Pat Bauer called reporters to his office this morning to say he had reason to believe that Republicans would use a parliamentary maneuver to rule a Democratic amendment out of order when the right to work bill will be debated next Tuesday.

A referendum would give Democrats a second chance to kill right to work. "It's time to have the people involved in this process," said Rep. Bauer. "I think that that will eliminate some of the outrage, some of the outrage of the public."

"I think it's a very reasonable amendment to offer," said House Speaker Brian Bosma after a pair of closed door meetings with Bauer, "and we indicated there'd be full and fair debate and discussion here and I indicated we wouldn't use parliamentary means to avoid the referendum."

The Speaker says he doesn't know how a vote on the referendum suggestion will come out but said he's not afraid of the outcome. Unlike other states Indiana has never had a statewide referendum on policy question like right to work.

Well, Hoosiers don't seem to want it passed according to the percentages on here. Like others have said, you have a right to join a union or not. If you are anti-union and if you apply for a job that has a union, and you accept that job, it's your fault for taking a union job. There are other places to work, ya know. Go to WalMart or Starbucks, they are anti-union! I am a union worker and don't want my pay being slashed or lose my job altogether like some have in Oklahoma and other RTW States. Right now, I'm trying to support me, my husband who lost his job 13 months ago, my daughter with a BS degree that has no job and her 3 children along with another daughter with a college degree who has been out of work as well and she has 1 child. You probably still believe The Federal Reserve is part of our government and our government looks out for and cares for the people. Wake up and quit being a "sheeple". Quit eating their GMO's, their drugs, drinking contaminated water due to their messes, quit letting the elite buy "OUR" government.....probably too late for that but we're not giving up without a fight and this is just the beginning! I'll not be a slave for the rich to become richer while they destroy the classes to only have the poor to be slaves for them to make even more money. It's close to that now. So stand up and be heard for "US", THE PEOPLE of this nation. We do have rights, let's quit letting them strip us from more rights and getting rid of our ways to earn a living. Or maybe all of us unselfish, reasonable, hard-working people should just quit and let you greedy rich people take care of us????? Like that would happen! Talk about population control. Or just wait for martial law and they will take everything away from everyone except the elite.....then maybe we will share our priceless treasures with the sheeple, like a roof over our head, second-hand or China made clothes, over-processed and over-treated pesticidal food, etc....etc....

And just so you people understand what you are voting up or down on this article . If you vote up you are in favor of the referendum. If you vote down, you are against the referendum. At the time of this post it looks like 80% are in favor of RTW to be voted on by the people next election.

@ 1776,, Banks go under and are taken over by bigger banks. They aren't union. The reason they go under is because of bad decisions and greed by their CEOs just like the airlines. Look at what happened when we (the tax payers) bailed the big banks out. Right after the banks got their bailout money the CEOs paid the high up employees (Presidents and vice presidents) half million dollar bonuses and went on big vacations. But yet people like you want to blame the bailouts for GM and Chrysler on the unions. When it really comes down to the CEOs making bad decisions.

@ 1776 ,, Back when unions were just forming, it took thugs and uprisings to get the corporations under control. That's all in the past. Unions don't beat up the corporate leaders any more. Do you think the people in Lybia were wrong to uprise and overthrow Khadafi's brutal government? If so , then I would say it was because it was something you believed in and should have happened. Same with the unions when they were forming. Without the unions , do you think the corporations will continue to treat employees with respect and give them a good wage and not take all their medical benefits away as they see fit to line thier own pockets ? I don't and that is what I believe will happen. Corporate leaders don't care about you or me? All they want is more money. Why do you think all those CEOs make millions of dollars each year while all their employees make minimum wage. Just because you are a union hater doesn't give you the right to take away anyone's good paying job. If you can't find a good paying non union job, then that's your problem. There's plenty of minimum wage jobs in the paper. We don't need anymore minimum wage jobs in Indiana. RTW will lower the wages in Indiana and soon all jobs will be low paying jobs. Then there will be no choice but to take a low paying job. Is that what you want ? The corporations do and that's why they lobbied for RTW.

@ 1776, yOU ASKED,,, If unions are so great, Why is only 13% of the work force union? ANSWER : most of employment is with businesses that are too small for a union. A business has to have about 40 or 50 employees to be eligible for a union. You asked: If unions are so great, then why do they have to resort to thug behavior and criminal intimidation? Answer : When was the last time you seen in the news about a union member being arrested for using thug behavior or criminal intimidation? This is 2012 not the 1940s. You asked : If unions are so great then why did the union steward I bought a house from have a towel for a bathroom door? Hillbily or just broke? It's no ones fault but the that person's that the house was a dump. Why would you buy a dump? Are you a hillbilly or are you just poor and need to get out and find you a real job with a union ? All the airlines you mentioned went under because of poor management not because of the unions. Unions don't run the corporations. Greedy CEOs run the corporations and cause them to go broke. While your father was making just enough to get by to raise you and your family, the CEO of delta was making millions and laughing at his employees all the way to the bank. You said you was in the military, You didn't say if you were drafted or enlisted. If you enlisted then you did choose to protect our freedoms not our rights. if you were drafted then you were made to protect our freedoms. The police ,firefighters and even teachers have unions, so I would say they are making sacrifices for the greater good. You asked : What happens after your referendum gets shot down? More crying? Answer : If it goes to referendum I doubt if anyone will complain that will be the people talking not the republican thugs. At least the RTW law will be known by the majority of the voters. That's what this is all about. After all of this, I have come to the conclusion that you are not very informed about too much of anything. and when you have the opportunity you should learn more about this RTW law before you choose to be a sheeple and follow the republican thugs that are mis-leading you .

Without a union "Big Business" will tell the employees how much they will pay, how hard they must work, and more than likely without health insurance. Why? Because there is no one to prevent this from happening. If the employee doesn't like it, they can go somewhere else to work. The union was started to prevent workers from unfair treatment. If the worker became ill at work and needed to leave, they would be fired and someone else brought in. This is what happened in Lowell, Massachusetts in the early 1800's. I realize the UAW has over stepped its boundaries. I don't think the intention of the union was to protect workers that just didn't want to work. Allow the workers to play cards rather than do their job. Allow workers to show up for work drunk. These kinds of incidences have given all unions a bad name. The working people do need some protection in regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions. This is why "Big Business" is so much against it. The Republicans tend to support "Big Business" instead of the working people.

Ahahahahahahahaha, then what happens after your referendum gets shot down? More crying? You can't get the votes in the legislature , because there isn't enough demoKKKrats. There isn't enough demoKKKrats because Indiana doesn't vote for union shills and Soros thugs. How are you going to get the votes to carry a referendum? Critical skills like thinking apparently isn't a union thing
1776
You know, as a member of the military I didn't pick and choose who's rights to protect, a police officer doesn't pick and choose what rights to protect, firefighters don't pick and choose what fires to put out. Perhaps the unionista's should stop being so selfish, make some sacrifice for the greater good.

I grew up the son of a Delta mechanic. If unions are so great then why did I grow up "On the hill" while the Eastern and American kids grow up in Brookmoore? OF which Delta absorbed Eastern in the 1980's, taking a good hard look at American. Where is Pan Am? TWA? Ozark? Northwest Orient? Northeast? I think we found the Union Fable. Organized Crime: Wiping out good American jobs since Stalin was a pup.
