INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Marion County Democratic Chairman is accusing GOP Mayor Greg Ballard of vetoing a plan to hire new police officers for political reasons.
Joel Miller said this morning that he's angry over what he sees as a lack of effort to address a rising murder rate. Mayor Ballard rejected a bi-partisan plan to spend $6 million in construction funds to hire new police officers. He says the plan is unsustainable.
"If we're gonna be a first class city, if we're gonna maintain our status as a destination for people," said Miller, "we need to be sure that people feel safe in our city, and right now people don't feel safe, and the mayor must do more."
The mayor promises to produce a plan that will put move 100 police officers from desk jobs to the street.
