Pence appoints NW Ind. mayor to university panel

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A northwestern Indiana city's mayor has been appointed to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence's office announced the appointment of Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas to the 14-member commission that coordinates the degree programs and missions of the state's universities and makes budget recommendations to the Legislature.

Costas is a Republican who has been Valparaiso's mayor since 2004. He's an attorney who graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law and St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer.
