Lawmakers work to fight hunger

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Republicans and democrats in the General Assembly joined together to fight hunger on Monday morning.

The leaders from both the House and Senate delivered donations to food bank representatives.

Indiana's 11 food banks served 1 million people last year and lawmakers are trying to help them meet the needs of the hungry.

According to Democratic minority leader Scott Pelath, one in six people in Indiana don't get enough to eat.

“If you're a kid and you're going to school hungry, you're not going to learn,” he said. “That means you're not going to be as successful and prosper as much later in life. If you're an adult and you're hungry you're (going to) get sicker.”

The four legislative leaders also appeared together in a public service announcement targeting hunger.
