Where are the political yard signs?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Have you noticed many Mitt Romney or Barack Obama yard signs this year?  We didn't, either.

Four years ago they were on almost every front lawn. But now less than 30 days from the election the streets seem to be void of presidential yard signs. 

“We're at the window now that you will see yard signs sprouting up all across the state," said Pete Seat, communication director for the Indiana Republican party.

He has a simple answer for the lower number of yard signs. 

“In many cities and towns yard signs legally cannot be placed in yards or anywhere, quite frankly, until 30 days to the election,” said Seat.

Former Marion County Republican Chairman and legislator Mike Murphy says there is more to the mystery than just the 30 day rule.  He says young voters are not enthusiastic like they were in 2008.  

"I don’t see young people ... really talking about it,” Murphy said. 

But for Professor Alison O’Malley, the answer lies in a person’s subconscious mind — to avoid confrontation.  

 “We're in such a combative political environment," said O'Malley, Butler University assistant professor of psychology. "Showing such clear support is really signaling something that could alienate you."
