A statewide smoking ban has been signed into law. Governor Mitch Daniels put his signature on the ban in a Statehouse ceremony this morning. It takes effect in July.
Smoking will be banned in public places but there are significant exceptions. They includes bars and taverns, private clubs, and tobacco shops. Before signing it, the governor made note of the fact that the new law comes after six years of efforts to create a smoking ban in Indiana. “But that just meant it took an incredible amount of effort, patience, and ability to understand the viewpoints of others,” he said, “to bring about the bill that we’re about to make law.”
Rep. Charlie Brown, one of the authors of the new law, said you have to “crawl before you can run” but he wants lawmakers to seek a tougher ban next year.
