Retail merchants who believe they operate at a disadvantage to online merchants continue to push for an Internet sales tax in Indiana. The Indiana Merchants for Tax Fairness released a poll this morning that shows 69% of Indiana voters believe that it’s unfair for Amazon and other online merchants to avoid sales taxes.
The governor made a deal with Amazon last month that delays sales tax collection until 2014.
“I live in the state of Indiana,” says Jeff Kinney, owner of Kinney Dancewear, “these people live in the stae of Indiana, and it’s time for them to stand up for the people in the state instead of making these deals that they won’t disclose to companies that don’t care about the state of Indiana.”
Kinney says he thinks an Internet sales tax would improve business at his shops in Indianapolis and Noblesville by 15%. The Indiana Merchants for Tax Fairness are trying to convince state lawmakers to impose an Internet sales tax this year.
