Unions promise no Super Bowl disruptions

The battle over Indiana’s new right to work law will not affect the Super Bowl.  Union leaders are promising no disruptions.

The NFL Players Association supported the unions who opposed right to work and it was one of the first topics raised at the NFLPA’s annual news conference late this afternoon.  But President DeMaurice Smith made it clear that the battleground is now in other states.  “We will continue to fight where we think that fight should be taken,” said Smith.

And Indiana labor leaders are now saying that yesterday’s march from the Statehouse to Super Bowl Village is the only disruption they plan related to the big game.  “We know that a lot of working men and women are relying on the Super Bowl to make a living,” said Nancy Guyott of the Indiana AFL-CIO, “and we’re gonna certainly wish them all the best and we wish for a successful game.”

Meantime the governor is using the Super Bowl to sell Indiana to corporate visitors and right to work is part of the sales pitch.  “On the pro side don’t exaggerate the advantages, it’s meaningful but it’s not a game changer,” said Mitch Daniels.  “On the negative side, don’t worry.”

But the governor says he’s already gotten a call from one company now willing to consider Indiana because of the new right to work law.
