In 1995, Burton sponsored a bill that allowed companies that dealt with the Cuban government to be sued in American courts if the companies made money that once belonged to Americans. President Clinton signed the bill into law shortly there after.

Burton also signed his name as a co-sponsor on a resolution seeking to establish a constitutional amendment that defined marriage in the US should only be between a Man and Woman. In his current campaign, Burton identifies job creation as his top priority. He says supporting the growth of small businesses is crucial to an environment favorable for creating jobs.
"I am strongly opposed to any amnesty plan,” Burton writes, “I continue to insist that any plan we debate must first deal with our broken borders." Burton says securing the borders is crucial for our safety and to ensure illegal immigrants won’t keep draining our economic resources. He also argues that the government should prohibit employers from hiring illegal workers.
