Before serving in Congress, André Carson served as a Local Board Officer/Investigator for the Indiana State Excise Police for nearly a decade, then he moved on to the Department of Homeland Security. He has also served on the Indianapolis City-County Council. His wife, Mariama works at Pike Township Schools. Together with their daughter, Salimah, they have lived in Center Township for more than 5 years.
Carson wishes to provide affordable, quality healthcare to Hoosiers. He wants to advocate for the uninsured people of America, particularly the children. He supports the State Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization bill which will help over 11 million children.
Carson voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This Act will direct about $800 billion to different programs such as schools, unemployment benefits, and healthcare to the needy. This project should also help with employment, putting about 75,000 Hoosiers back in the job market. He also believes that America can recover the economy, which is why he is working on the House Financial Services Committee.
Carson also supports the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act. He wishes to help struggling families receive permission for bankruptcy judges to extend repayment periods and reduce interest rates and principals. Carson believes that home ownership provides stability for families and neighborhoods. He has also posted forums for struggling Indianapolis families who wish to keep their homes.
Carson supported President Obama’s decision to end combat missions in Iraq this year. He is opposed to the War in Iraq even though he believes troops should be honored for their service and heroism throughout. He thinks that there is a need to refocus the efforts and resources we have to Afghanistan.
Carson believes in investing in education. He voted in favor of the College Opportunity and Affordability Act. He says he see through his wife, who is an educator, the challenges and problems that teachers and students face. He wants to work to help cut costs of college tuition and expand the availability of loans and grants.
Carson wishes to end the energy crisis by supporting the idea of spending the money here in the Midwest, instead of sending it to the Middle East. He wants Indiana to be at the center of the new energy economy by voting for the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act which boosts green job incentives.
Carson’s main issue is his desire to improve Hoosier’s quality of life, by addressing the areas that he thinks are the most important at this time. He thinks these core issues should be solved first in order to pave the way for better quality in the 7th Congressional District.
